Being Christian does NOT mean hating gays

As someone who grew up in a very conservative, Christian home, I can assure you that I have been in your shoes. With the number of individuals increasing in our society who are 'coming out,' I too have wondered "Would God want me to love them, or hate them?"

Well, let's take a look at some scripture to answer that question:

You are the people of God; he loved you and chose you for his own. So then, you must clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Be tolerant with one another and forgive one another whenever any of you has a complaint against someone else. You must forgive one another just as the Lord has forgiven you. And to all these qualities add love, which binds all things together in perfect unity."
— Colossians 3:12-14

Here, God tells us that as He has forgiven us, and loves us, so shall we do the same for our fellow man. We must be compassionate for one another, treat our neighbors with kindness, not shame others when we, ourselves, are to be shamed, and be loving to all.

"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres."
— 1 Corinthians 13:4-8

The underlined portions are the key parts here. God does not want his children mistreating each other because of the sin they carry. We are all made equal, regardless of the sin we make, under Him. One of the key points God makes in his word is to love. In fact, the word "love" appears in The Bible over 1700 times! If that doesn't tell you love is important, I don't know what will. I know it can be difficult to accept certain people and ways of life that are different from you and yours, but being Christian means loving everyone around you, and ignoring their sin.

Unless you are perfect, you have no place judging and belittling those around you. The only person free of sin, is Jesus, and even he didn't treat the sinners poorly. In fact, he gave special attention to them, to those who needed the light and truth the most. We all need to learn to be like Jesus, and to love our fellow humans for what's in their hearts, not on their bodies.

Many people argue whether being gay is a sin or not. Honestly? It shouldn't matter to you. All that matters is that you love everybody, and treat them just as the LORD would.

"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."   — Romans 3:23
